Lloret de Mar

History

Lloret

Lloret's name is found in the Latin root of Lauretum indicating Lauro or laurel forest.  In fact, entering Lloret de Mar, there is a curious group of sculptures relating to Apollo stripped of clothes, looking puzzled at Lauro, a tree being born on earth where Daphne (nymph), had just disappeared.  The ancient Iberians who inhabited the area, chose to live in the surrounding hills, not far from the coast, for their security and to keep watch for potential invasion.

Greek and Phoenician ships brought cargo which needed to be stored, this changed the structural system of the villages where underground warehouses were created to store goods.  From this period we find numerous archaeological remains of Puig de Castellet and Montbarbat, the ruins of the Turo Rodo, Coll de la Torre Llop and Roman tomb.

Beaches and coves

Among the many coves and beaches on Lloret de Mar, you will find: Moorish Cala; Cala Canyelles; Cala Gran; Cala Tortuga; Cala Trons; Cala des Frares; Lloret; Banys Cala; Cala de Sa Boadella (a nudist beach) and Santa Cristina,Treumal and Fenals beaches.  Popular legend has it that ships coming from the Americas stopped at the beaches, which allowed the locals of Lloret to engage in smuggling.  Fishermen, with their boats equipped with fishing lights, are called Fanals, and are a pretty sight illuminated at night along the beach.  Lloret de Mar's main beach (length: 1,630 m; width: 45 m; white sand) is one of the most popular of Costa Brava´s beaches and is consistently awarded the Blue Flag for cleanliness.
